I think podcasting could be good as a newsletter-alternative. However, with a podcast, it definitely needs to be much heavier on the value-added content and less on the self-promotion/advertising. Unlike RSS feeds and email subscriptions, I think people are more selective with which podcasts they listen too (at least I am). I only subscribe to about 3-4 podcasts and I unsubscribe pretty quickly if I'm not getting any value out of it.
