One needs to have a list of 'opt ins' in order to send emails to non customers. While I think email is effective to such a list, by far not the best way to prospect. Social media AND direct mail (yes, it still kicks butt if done right) work the best to cultivate/create prospects.

To use email effectively (and legally) create an opt-in form on your website or landing page. Use the 80/20 rule, 80% information and 20% selling. Try to sell them too hard and they will opt out or mark you as spam (they do it even if they opted in).
