Agree that the Adwords tool is probably the best one to start with. If you are doing PPC, make sure you have all of the columns visible in the display - it will show the the max CPC, the monthly search volume and number of competitors for each specific keyword.

Another Google tool that is not widely publicized which is great for brainstorming keywords is the 'Wonder Wheel' - basically you give it a root keyword and it displays graphically several related but different keyword phrases around it in a wheel. You can then click on any of these words to build the list even bigger.

To find it, perform a search in Google - click on 'Show Options' and on left hand side, you'll see 'Wonder Wheel' - click on it and have a play around with it - quite useful for uncovering different keyword variations!

I too think Google Keyword tool is great from your perspective. But yes there are many tools which are of great help, word tracker is one among them. Google also provides many tools such as Google trends, Google suggest, one can try any among them and been benefited by them.

You're probably best starting out with
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal .

Then once you've made some progress you can move up to other tools that will pay for themselves.

Spyfu is pretty good with matching up with what you described. But based on my experiences I only use competitor meta tags and keywords for "idea" research. Best way I can describe using someone else's keyword research for your own keywords .... kind of like the blind leading the blind often unless it is a rare case where the seo who did the work well. But it can be a good brainstorming process to go through - just research further (popularity/competitiveness) beyond another competitor targeting a keyword.

Anyone else, please feel free to keep adding on what you use or anything else helpful.
Can you please tell us something about Spyfu tool? I never heard of this before.
