Default New Site And Zip Code Sorter

Hi guys, I need a little advice.

Im in the planning stage for an e-commerce site with personal delivery. However I want to roll it out gradually.

How can I include a zip code identifier that will let me select a small radius e.g. 3mile then expand over time as the company grows?

Default There's An API For That

Zip code grabbing is tricky and spotty, nationwide. That being said, there are lots of zip code directories and whatnot out there, if you want to roll your own service.

If you wish to try something already in action, you should check out the free API provided by Redline 13:

http://zipcodedistanceapi.redline13.com

(I am in no way associated with Redline 13. I just like their generosity.)

As far as automating the growth of your marketing radius, that's pretty easily accomplished if you're willing to manually trigger the next expansion.

Seems to me, not knowing your industry or its tools, that you should be able to at least set an event in a scheduler to fire off a script, which updates some variable in an include file, which is called the next time a request for the data is received, which can then send the new variable value to the service as part of the API call.

Depending on your hardware and software requirements, you may even be able to tie the expanding-radius-value script execution to threshold(s) in your accounting or marketing program ... i.e. when your QuickBooks Checkbook 1 Total Revenue field hits $1000, expand the radius variable by 5 miles for the next service call. Or, whenever a sales team defines a new territory, update the query parameters with the new area coordinates.

Hope that's the sort of stuff you are looking for!
