Lightbulb Long Tail Keywords-Deliver More Traffic!

Amplifying traffic/sales, should be one of the biggest objectives of a website owner. There are ways to make this happen for essentially any website. One relatively unorthodox, but logical way to do this, is by using the power of long tail keywords.

Long tail keywords are simply multi-phrase search queries, which visitors use on search engines. They are really nothing more than the natural phrases that are typed into searches to help visitors land on the pages they really want. These long tail keywords are way more targeted than the general or main keyword topic,& they literally manifest a visitorís need for the specific information they are seeking. The more detailed the phrase, the more likely it is for a searcher to obtain the information he/she really wants or needs.

This approach basically plays out like how people actually use search engines. Rather than looking for "potty training", those looking to learn how to go about this process would most likely type in more defining terms. For example, "potty training for toddlers", or "toddler potty training underwear", or "potty training tips for boys (or girls)" would be used. While these terms might not have the search engine ranking the more popular single terms do, they can play to a website owner's advantage.


Here are 5 of the main benefits or reasons why you should really consider long tail keywords, to optimize your website:

1.) These keywords have a potential for a higher conversion rate (since the exact focus of the searcher's request has been met). Visitors arriving through multi-phrase search queries might be more likely to make purchases or convert on affiliate programs or recommendations. By targeting these long tail phrases, you are effectively targeting a market of potential buyers.

2.) These Keywords are easy to rank. Therefore it is not difficult to make your website rank well on search engines. For long tail keywords don't have the competition out there that more popular words do, obtaining a overall higher ranking is generally accessible.

3.) Can bring more visitors to your website, when used correctly,& drive more targeted traffic over the long haul. Targeting long tail keywords will gradually lead to more search engine traffic because youíll have a lot of pages indexed and ranked for specific phrases related to your web business. This means increased visibility also.

4.) Higher revenue potential. Search engine visitors are extremely valuable because searchers are targeted individuals who are seeking specific information and hence are more likely to click on ads or subscribe to your site, newsletter, blog, etc. This will grow your audience and allow you an increased revenue in the long run through your own product sales, affiliate sales, or the use of third-party ad networks.

5.) Driving traffic to a website isn't easy at times. Going through the backdoor by zooming in on niches can be one way to make more targeted traffic happen. Basically, the benefits come from tapping into a lot of different tailored searches, rather than trying to compete with thousands of other sites that focus solely on the main single-word keywords. Long tail keywords are the key that can unlock it all!

I am new but I read many about SEO and until now, I am still confuse what is the difference between long tail keywords with LSI (latent semantic indexing) keywords could you tell me the difference?

Tyipcally, people optimize a website for specific terms. As an example, if you were an accountant in Dallas, TX, the home page title may be something like:

"Accountant - Dallas, TX"

That title would come up when people are searching for an accountant in the Dallas area. However, there is a huge number of searches where people enter a more 'natural' phrase like "help with income tax in Dallas".

In order to come up for that search, the website should have content on it that includes statements like "as an accountant, I can help you with all your income tax need. We are accountants in Dallas, Texas".

The terms should appear in Titles, Meta Description and on page content. When you write a lot of content, you have a much better chance of 'hitting' on these 'long tail' search strings.

In reality, they are a more detailed search and typically convert better, because the visitor already knows what he/she wants. So when they find it, they are ready to purchase or take action and contact you.

sabre33: "latent semantic indexing" is not something you need to be concerned about, as it is one of many features used by search engine algorithms to rank their results. As a webmaster/SEO specialist, you don't use it. Google does.

In a nutshell, LSI refers to the process of "indexing" (reading-in and categorizing) the body text on a webpage in such a way that keyword phrases can match that content based on the "semantic", or "intended meaning" of the phrase ("dog food"="kibble"), rather than by strict character matching ("dog food"="dog food").

I do have one note about the article, as a fan of the long tail:

Long tail keyphrases do indeed help to prequalify visitors, leading to higher conversion rates, than short tail keyphrases for the reasons noted in the article. However long tail keyphrases are both searched on and matched less frequently than short tail keyphrases simply because of their length and variety, and therefore bring in LESS actual traffic that the shorter alternatives.

For example, more people search for "dog food" than "looking for the best kind of food to feed to my dog", therefore more people will see the results of the shorter phrase, and more of them will have the opportunity to click your listing.

So the traffic you receive as a result of long tail phrases WILL be more likely to convert, for the reasons noted in the article, however you will receive LESS traffic, overall.

The bottom line lies in the ROI ... you may make more money from the fewer qualified visitors than you will from the many less-qualified visitors when you factor in your PPC spend, so don't freak out when your traffic drops along with your PPC spend while your bank account grows.

Stupid Script,

I am new to the forums but have been involved in e-commerce development for a few years now and you make an excellent point. I have seen it time and time again when customer's actual traffic goes down after an seo campaign but the store's revenue increases. End result the store owner is happy which makes my bosses happy. It is simply about finding the right traffic. Sometimes when store owners try to get too niche, they end up shooting themselves in the foot. To both situations I say to test and test frequently. The internet landscape is changing and as a business owner you have to be able to change with it.

There are alot of ways to test how good certain terms are but to me a little market research always does the trick. Ask friends and family, what would you search for if you were buying blank. The more people you ask the better chance you will have to make a correct decision.

I think both long term or not, helps a lot to gain more traffic. It depends on how you optimize it and how maintain it.

yes, long tail keywords shows much impact on the conversion rate of the sales and little contribution to the traffic, finally dollars matters for any organization. So i would suggest to use long tail keywords for optimization.

I'm not so sure of that, I mean a good key word may be not long, but it's hard to get one, especially if your niche is popular, so here the main thing is the popularity of the word, and the price of it

I think keywords are major source to attain the major flow of traffic towards your site. It doesn't matter either long or short. These help the visitors to come on your site.
