LOL.

We had a thread related to this yesterday at High Rankings.

The keyword meta tag is pretty useless but can be good for targeting mis-spellings or very, very obscure words with little to no competition. Also as noted in the HR thread, only Yahoo and Ask currently even pay any attention to the keywords meta tag. Google and MSN completely ignore it.

Default Meta Tags

One effect to consider is W3 Validation.
Although the keyword Meta tag may not carry weight for relevance it probably should be used to insure the page adheres to W3 validation standards.

The hypothesis is that W3 validated pages receive higher weight in search engine algorithms than non-validated pages.

Hi David,

Welcome to the forums.

I'm not sure that I see the connection between the meta keywords tag, and validation. I can see the use of a number of different elements that are essential to validation, such as including a document type declaration, a meta encryption coding, using opening and closing html tags, and head and body sections.

But when it comes to including a meta keyword element or not, I don't think that even matters when it comes to validation. The lack of such a tag doesn't mean that a page won't validate.

Is there something about this particular element that makes you think that it is essential to the validation of a page, because I just don't see it.

I'm also not sure that a page that does validate will rank higher in search engines then one that does. I believe in using validation as a way to mitigate against risk that there is some error that may cause a page to not rank well.

Here are pagerank 9 and 10 pages that do not validate according to the W3C validation program:

http://www.adobe.com/
http://www.apple.com/
http://www.energy.gov/engine/content.do
http://www.firstgov.gov/
http://www.google.com/
http://www.macromedia.com/
http://web.mit.edu/
http://www.nsf.gov/
http://www.nytimes.com/
http://www.real.com/
http://www.statcounter.com/
http://www.blogger.com/start

Here are the two pagerank 10 sites that I found that did validate:

http://www.w3.org/
http://www.webstandards.org/

Now we do know that pagerank is only one of a multitude of factors that counts towards how well a site ranks for specific queries. But all of the sites above tend to do pretty well in searches for subjects that are within the scope of their fields.

I suspect that an overwhelming majority of sites on the web fail to validate, and at least more than half don't even include proper DTDs or character encryptions. That's true with a number of those sites I listed above.

Frankly, I wish that validation were a factor in the rankings of sites. I suspect that in a number of cases, the errors that aren't being caught because people didn't bother to validate do hurt rankings. But, a site isn't more or less relevant because it has or hasn't been validatated.

Meta tags are very useful to increase the ranking of the website. Try to use those keywords which generally people type in search engine, this will help to rank your page in the SERPs pages.

This is why Google give not priority to the meta keyword. Now meta keyword tag is not play important role in the search engine optimization. Because people misuse this tag and do spamming. Google webmaster's clear told to the persons who are doing the seo that Google give not priority of the meta keyword tag.

As of Google, meta keywords does not have anything to do with that. But it is our wish to add in our webpages. It is the standard rule which we need to implement while optimizing a site. We need to add proper title tag, meta description and meta keywords.

But other search engines like yahoo, bing these meta keywords really helps in ranking the site in top. So why we need to avoid these simple seo tips. Our main aim is to not to focus only on Google but if we focus on other search engines also we can get more business.
