Default Barcode Advise - Alternative To GS1 Membership?

Can anyone help with advise on product barcodes?

I have a couple of small products that I currently sell online only. I want to start selling in stores via a distributer... I'm guessing I need a barcode on each product?

I understand that barcodes are managed and allocated in each country and in the UK it is controlled by GS1 - UK - http://www.gs1uk.org

To get barcodes from GS1 I need to join them (102) and pay an annual subscription (another 102). I wouldn't mind it I was going to be selling dozens of products, but that's a lot for 2 or 3 products and eats into my meagre profits for no particular benefit!

Is there a cheaper legitimate way of getting a couple of proper, approved barcodes? There seem to be re-sellers around, but I'm not sure whether they are legit? Or can I sell without barcodes? I imagine that all retailers would insist on them, but I have no experience in this area.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks,
Paul

Hi,

Wow, quiet pretty prices. In Poland it's about 20 year subscription and 50 by 100 codes (2 free digits in granted code mask). I don't know details about registration procedure, but I suppose that service is avaiable for all EU bisnesses. Try this.
On the other hand, You don't need EAN13 codes, maybe. EAN8 is free for all users. If your codes are unique (in store's base), distributors will accept this solution.

Regards,

Paul

Welcome to the big leagues! It's hard ball, fast pitch!

I went through this a few years ago in N. America. I can't remember the fees, but it was nuts!

Problem is... big retailers RUN THEIR BUSINESS on a system that relies on barcodes and their computer system. They scan everything.

However, there could be (you don't mention the type of product or industry) distributors that don't need barcodes. Typically it's the retailers that scan.

Now for the real kicker... get a load of this. I was in the Auto Parts business... and some large jobber operations (600+ stores and others with 1,000's of stores...) will tell you this. YOU GET PAID XX NUMBER OF DAYS AFTER THE PRODUCT IS SCANNED!

In other words... you put YOUR product on THEIR shelf... and get paid when they scan it... meaning sell it.

How much can you finance? Now that's the real question.

Good luck! I hope this helps!
