Click Forensics have issued a very informative report. The fact is that it is hard to catch an online criminal. Click Fraud will continue without any problem because you just cannot stop it.

I wondered about this type of cheating... I see it as a potential flaw

Yes David you are 100% right, we just did an article on the subject this month. Our research showed a 27% fraud rate. There are a lot of companies that have users everywhere that sit and click adds all day and Google has had a lot of lawsuits over this. It could possibly become the thing that really really hurts their business model. What we recommend to our clients is to use a paid placement banner as well as paid to perform ads like what linkshare provides. You only pay for the click if a sale results from that click. The article is on our website if anyone wants more information than I can type in this post.

Offline media wouldn't be able to get away with that kind of failure rate. They'd be out of business. But it's more than acceptable online.

This is true but if you have enough money to throw at something, some of it is bound to stick to it and that is what makes it acceptable, and unfortunate at the same time.

There are some fraud websites that offers these kinds of services for our PPC campaigns it sounds funny though, I think google is wise to indicate the IP of each visitors so visiting again doesn't count right?

pay-per-click advertising is used for false clicks to make money for the Web sites. Most search engine ad vendors say that they protect their advertiser’s against click fraud by employing screening/detection processes and techniques, those who pay for the PPC ads must rely solely on the fraud detection technology of the ad provider – the very same company from whom they were purchasing their ads.
