Smile What Would You Ask Entrepreneur Extraordinaire, Richard Branson?

A unique event is taking place this week, tonight in Miami, Florida and then continuing online throughout the week. It's an entrepreneurship event.

Richard Branson (the billionaire founder of Virgin Airlines and Virgin Music) will be talking about his big adventure in entrepreneurship. Then some business bloggers -- myself included -- will be writing about what Branson says online -- and about entrepreneurship generally.

More about this is over at Small Business Trends: What Would You Ask Richard Branson?

What question would you ask him if you had the chance?

I'd ask him why he gives an extreme hard time to businesses around the world which might happen to have the word 'VIRGIN' in their business name, some of them had the name long before Branson ever thought of it.

Talking I'm glad we have judges and courts to figure this stuff out!

Hi Machine,
Welcome, and thanks for your comment.

I assume you are referring to the kind of situation described in this article from Australia?

I do not know a single thing about any trademark actions involving Virgin except what I read in the newspapers and online.

However, I can comment in general on trademark enforcement issues.

Do companies sometimes take a hard line on enforcing their trademark rights? Yes, they do sometimes.

However, it's a fine line they have to balance.

You see, if they are too lax and don't enforce their trademarks, what they tend to get are imitators. Imitators will push the envelope in their efforts to ride the coattails of existing brands, deliberately trying to convey the impression in consumers' minds that they are associated with the brand name, when they are not.

Remember, these situations rarely are black and white. The trademark owner is not 100% in the right, 100% of the time. And the smaller companies are not 100% in the right, 100% of the time.

That's why I am glad we have courts, to sort through the circumstances and reach just decisions.

Default Great Question

I would ask him what keeps him up at night and how has that changed over the years?

I'd ask him if he could spare me some dosh to help me move my business to the next level, pleading that I was one of the people who bought Tubular Bells when it came out, setting him on his way to his first million.

I love this thread.. I'd ask him what would a local business do to help it's local community.

I heard on the grapevine he's in London on or around July 2nd doing a talk.
I found the info here: National Achievers

I wonder if Darren Wagstaff will be there too?
