Hi,
Basically you seek other people with websites related to your site and offer to exchange links with them. High quality links will improve your google ranking and search engine results.

However, beware of many automated link building tools, as many of these create links in "link farms" and other sham sites that may actually lower your ranking in google.

Link exchanges are harder to come by nowadays because they are an old school method...but they can still be effective. If you're serious about using ths method, I would consider signing up with LinksManager.com for $20 per month. With link exchange programs, you get what you pay for and these guys are one of the best. I used them a while back and they make things easier. I'm not affiliated with them; just giving my opinion.

Link exchange is one of the process in SEO. In this we take support of other site as back link by giving our site as backlink. This is also called reciprocal linking. These are of 2 types.. Two way and three way linking.

Very good point Google allows link exchanges but don't get carried away with them or you can be penalized. If you participate in link hubs (site A links to site B then site B links to you and you link back to site A) you can reduce the likelihood that Google will penalize you. It may be a little paranoid and this is really only necessary if you are doing a lot of exchanges since a handful will not be likely to incur Google's wrath.

I thought I'd understood that reciprocal links are less highly ranked and possibly penalized?

Seems like if the reciprocals aren't random, it should rank higher...but I've been scared to exchange links.

It's okay to exchange reciprocal links with relevant sites. Do NOT reciprocate with unrelated sites. A baby toy site reciprocating with a casino site, for instance, is a HUGE red flag. And I'd highly recommend NOT using link exchange programs that automate the exchanging of links. They leave a definite footprint that Google can likely detect using their Affiliated Page Linking patent that was approved last month after 6 yrs of waiting.

The value of reciprocal links likely varies with your niche or vertical. With some types of web sites, there just aren't a lot of related sites so reciprocal links are often the only option and provide a great benefit to site visitors. Google likely allows a high percentage of reciprocal links in the back link profiles of these types of sites. However, in other industries where there are lots of sites available to get links from, having a high percentage of reciprocal back links would likely raise a red flag and could end up being devalued. Eric Ward who is known in the industry as "Link Moses" because he's been building links for 15+ years for the likes of National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, and countless other companies large and small explains it best here: http://www.ericward.com/bestpractice...eciprocal.html

The key is don't rely on this or any other link building strategy exclusively. You want a diverse back link profile.... some footer/blogroll links... some links from guest blog posts and/or comments... some links from directories... some links from article submission sites... some links from press releases... some natural links... etc. Using a single back linking strategy makes your site VERY vulnerable to algorithm changes that may target one or more method of linking.

I use Linkman by PHP Junkyard it's free unless you want to remove the powered by tag then it's $19.95. I have it integrated with my site. If somebody wants to trade a reciprocal link with me they just post my link info on their page then fill in the form on my page Linkman will then go out and verify that a link to my site has been posted and in turn post their info on my site. I don't have do anything You can also set it so that you only accept pages with a certain Page rank. Here it is in action on my site http://www.yocs.net/links.htm. If you have a business that is similar to mine feel free to trade links.

I would be VERY careful about using link exchanges such as these. As you can see from YOCS' page, you will end up with links to many types of sites, many of which can end up damaging your own site's reputation and potentially getting your own site penalized or banned. As it is the case for YOCS, you often end up being totally irrelevant to your site.

What you need to realize is... EVERY link that you place on your site pointing to another site is a potential liability. So you need to be very careful to whom you link. If you're not 110% sure that the site you're linking to abides by all of Google's webmaster guidelines, you should NOFOLLOW that link.

If a site that you link to with a FOLLOWed link ends up getting penalized for violating Google's webmaster guidelines, YOUR site can be penalized as well for promoting a "bad neighborhood" site.

Just look at the list of links that YOCS is linking to that have absolutely nothing to do with online computer repair:

Internet Affiliate Program
hotel ishia (I wouldn't link to that site even with a NOFOLLOW lol... Looks very shady)
Dental Offices in GA
Chat (again some foreign language site. VERY suspect).
Security solutions
Digital photography
Hockey Jerseys
Best Free Keylogger (I GET A MCAFFEE ALERT when I go there saying the site has been reported as UNSAFE... probably a malware site).
Bamboo wood flooring
Toronto current events
Private investigators in Bangalore (REALLY?)
Los Angeles Internet Marketing
Fotographo
inventory software
WoW Private Servers (ROFL I played World of Warcraft for 4 years... but never needed my computer repared).
Cash Advance
Barcode printing
Private Investigator in New Delhi.
Free Classifieds in India

The list goes on.

Pages like these are a big red flag... And some of those sites are very shady and could result in getting YOCS site penalized.

Are those 50 links you get from those no name, potentially damaging sites really worth getting your own site penalized?
