Smile Good question.

I am only slightly familiar w/start ups. That being said, some of the start ups from UCSB were started by professors. They then chose their former/current students to be employees!

Or if you initial business is small, you could just hire people on a consulting basis; that is, hire them on a project by project basis.

That depends on the funds that you have. You can hire people to work for you full time or hire freelancers and pay them per project basis only. It's good that you have a number of employees permanently to maintain and manage you business.

I guess it would help to know what kind of start up but a great source would be going down to your local colleges and talking to the career development dept.
