For a local business, going through the steps yahoo local, google local YP has all been a serious part of my efforts. Building backlinks to those sites also dramatically helps my clients looking to serve a local area with their business.

So yeah I am going to have to go with it all depends on what exactly your looking to do just because 1 thing works for 1 model doesn't mean it will work for another. Mainly because from market to market some areas are so saturated while others are left un touched

Some indivual category specifics:

Air Conditioning: 50% did 50% didn't

Also, a recent report from the Kelsey Group shows that over 60% of shoppers now use Search Engines and on-line yellow pages and only 33% use the actual printed book.

By the way, I have been in the yellow page industry since 1985.

I've seen the online yellow pages and I don't buy the claim that anyone would actually use it.

2 - Forget extra cost color

* The only thing color has been proven to do in Yellow Pages advertising is increase the price you pay for the ad.
I also have to disagree with this. Being a person who sits down at the table with the new customer and asks them questions about where they heard about us, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt where they heard about me before I leave and often their motivations for choosing me over the competition.

More than enough to pay for the extra cost of color in the ad(which isn't terribly great) I have heard these responses:

"I liked the pretty green color"
"It was brightly colored and seemed nice"
"Your ad really stood out because of the colors"
etc, etc.
