Default My First Forum Of Any Kind!

Hi, my name is cindy and my longtime dream is to own my own consignment store, either furniture or clothing. I want to know from owners, can you make money owning a shop or just enough to get by?

Thank you!

Yes.. you can either create an online ecommerce store where the products can be viewed by any customer online and get the product via home delivery or getting it directly from the retailer.

If you are talking about a physical shop, you have to go with the old real estate priority list: location, location, location. That means very expensive rent.

Consider what your profit would be on the average item sold. How many items do you think you can sell in a typical week? Multiply it. Is that enough to pay rent, insurance, etc, plus provide you with survival income?

That's why most people that are starting small, will start online these days.

Hi Cindy, and welcome to the Forum.

You can do nicely with online clothing sales, especially if you can find or create a niche for yourself.

My youngest daughter used to be a fashion designer and model, then decided to open an online second-hand designer clothing stores through Ebay.com.

She researched her niche, found sources (mostly thrift shops in more expensive suburbs where high-income women regularly sent their less-than-up-to-the-minute clothing, shoes and accessories to local thrift stores and opportunity shops).

She would regularly visit these stores, purchase items that would appeal to her niche market, photograph them well so that they looked their best, and she did very well, building a formidable list of clients whom she'd notify when she released a new batch of designer items.

She gave up her business when she moved to the other side of the country to study voice and opera, but whenever she's home she still visits her old suppliers to replenish her wardrobe.
