Default What do you like about webcams?

I'm doing a little research. If you use a webcam, tell me what you like about it. What do you mainly use it for? (Chatting with grandma? Making sure the dog isn't tearing your house apart? Business? What?)

Are you concerned with:

technologically advanced features?
keeping your face centered on the screen?
being able to move around the room while chatting?
adding more fun to your chat (special effects, smilies, etc.)?

Thanks!

I bought a webcam for each of my family members (brother, sister, parents, uncle, etc.) for christmas several years ago. I think we all tried to use it once or twice but its ackward. I have it sitting on my desk but I use it occassionaly when instant messageing friends.

I have an older one installed. Its resolution is not great. I use it for quick graphics that need not be perfect.

I think I would use it more if I had a newer one that delivered a sharper image.

Although it isn't a webcam, we have one camera and dedicated monitors that we use to watch the front yard so we can always see the kids.

For the next camera, I plan to use a webcam (because it's cheaper) and mount it inside one of our windows so we can look out at a different angle. For this camera we'll run the image in a window on our desktops.

Your idea about the dogs has me thinking now too. We have two big dogs and it would be nice to be able to see what their up to in the house when we're on the road.

How 'bout this stuff?

technologically advanced features?
keeping your face centered on the screen?
being able to move around the room while chatting?
adding more fun to your chat (special effects, smilies, etc.)?

Any interest in those features?

Definately. I've seen many 'high-energy' sales folks pace around and gesticulate while closing potential clients.

If the technology goes towards inexpensive visual phone calls, a steady tracking cam would be a gold mine.

But what about now... for you and your current uses?

I use a webcam when I talk to friends who live very far away and I don't see them very often. It's the only possibility to see them live.
