Hi Linda - I have also found that running a competition linked directly to an email response has increased our database by over 16% - the biggest increase we have ever had in 12 months.

I use competitions too - both online and offline to build my list.

I'm starting to use article marketing too for building the email list as well as the customer base and it's working.

As I get sales from every email newsletter I send out I find it hard to understand why people would forget to do their's - there's money in it! But there you go, we all come from different directions with our emails with different expectations.

I send out a monthly newsletter. I have found the best ways to build my various mailing lists are through articles, press releases and forums.

competitions have worked for us too, but we also try to have some very short e-newsletters - more like flyers really - that don't ask for anything - just give some free useful info. I feel it helps build trust and increases the likelihood that the e-mail gets read...which comes in handy when the next e-mail is sent out.

I would argue the most important factor of a successful mass email is a proper heading. You want to let the reader know what the email is about before they read some of it and think you are wasting their time. So make it thoughtful and intriguing. Also, offer something for free, or something deeply discounted each time. This may convince a potential customer to take the plunge. Your profits won't be as high, but it's a profit you wouldn't normally be receiving, and their experience will start a word of mouth campaign from THEM of YOUR behalf.

I am just now reading into all of this and am going to offer a coupon for 15% off their first order for signing up - should I offer more and what types of competitions do you use? I don't know that I have ever heard of that before.

Good article
I have also used free contest (maybe that is what others are referring to as competitions) to help build a list. I have offered a free phone consultation for new users who sign up for my list for a particular month. This is a good angle to help promote your list to the press, on a blog, and social networking sites.
