Shahzaib,

The best strategy in my opinion is the following:

1) Make sure your website is optimized (titles, meta descriptions, internal links, sitemaps, rss feeds, etc) for your keywords that you are targeting.

2) Make sure your Google Plus Local (former Google Places) is optimized

3) Claim and verify as many 3rd party directories (yelp, yellowpages, manta, etc) as possible and make sure your contact information matches to the letter the one you have in Google +.

4) Create accounts on the major social media websites. Even if you don't plan or using them, it is a good idea to create them. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Gravatar would be a good list to start with. Make sure your business contact information matches the one in Google +

5) Make a video. It can be a a video of you, a powerpoint presentation and screen capture, an animation, etc. Preferably create a couple of videos. Make sure your keyword and phone number is in the title of each.

In the description of each video, provide a link to your website and also create a citation with your business contact information.

The above strategy, while basic, will provide you with a pretty strong foundation in terms of links, social signals and citations.

After all of that is done, you can go into more advanced link building and promotions but that is a totally separate topic.

Hope this helps,

Konstantin Angelov

Avoid unethical ways of link building, i.e buying or selling links, spam or any other black hat techniques will kill you. Its all about earning links with help of quality content

Here are few tips to get rid of Google penguin updates.

1. Clean up spammy link grids and overuse of keyword phrases on your site. Make sure you arenít over using head terms as anchor text links on your site.

2. Look at duplicate title tags and fix these issues.

3. Fix duplicate alt tags on photos. We find this all the time. Itís easy to use the head terms in alt tags instead of taking the time and creating a definitive alt tag for each photo.

4. Thicken your content. If you have thin content on your pages with overuse of head terms, then add good quality content to those pages and diversify the keywords on those pages. You want to have ďauthorityĒ quality content on your site. If you over use keywords on a page, Google looks at this as keyword stuffing.

5. Get rid of duplicate content. Many sites use duplicate content for city and state landing pages. They only change the name of the city/state but all the other content remains the same. Take the time to make each of these pages unique.

The best post-penguin strategy is the same as the best pre-penguin strategy, white hat SEO. Black/grey hat tactics have never been useful in the long run, they might get you to the top for a little while, but they'll never last.

Keep in mind that penguin is different than panda. The penguin update had more to do with links--panda dealt with on-page content and low quality content.

Post penguin, you need to analyze your site's link profile--and make sure that your site is diversified, especially the anchor text of links that are pointing to your site. Too much of one particular anchor text is not good. Your link profile should look as "natural" as possible.

Here is some more information about diversifying the anchor text links to your site:

This is a simple strategy that can get you started for free, just set aside a few hours and join and complete as detailed as possible profiles on all the free local directories and you have a great launchpad.

One of the strategy that you can use is link-baiting. This can be done by publishing only well-written/well-researched articles on your site that people will be happy to link to. The benefit of those links is that they always tend to be quality that carry lots of weights in the eyes of Google.
