There are always pros & cons for individual web developers...
Of course creativity and the latest trend follow best.

The only way you learn is to do it. Fail and you will succeed.

The one most fail to follow is to Obey the standards! Web designers want to show you how much they can do. Flash this.. flash that! When it comes to search.. those sites fall flat on their face!

We had a client with a 5 year old site that was all pretty much flash. Google had 2 pages indexed! That's all! And their text version was a BLANK PAGE! Ha!

We took the site over... 6 months later the client was ranking ABOVE the manufacturer for the parts they were selling. Our clients (of course) were very happy.

Stick to the standards. Yes, they are boring... but they work!!

Sheesh... look at cars. Now there's a standard. Every one of them has 4 wheels; steering wheel in the front seat... passenger seat on one side...
What do you think would happen if we changed THAT standard?? Maybe try putting the drivers seat and steering wheel in the back seat? Oh yeah.. that's going to work well.

Build your website following the conventions. When you get to the search engines... you will be glad you did!

How about doing a usability analysis? Testing a site and how user interact can be one of the easiest ROIs

I don't agree with SEO as an after thought but other than that it's a great list
