Default How Much Do You Spend For Link Building?

as stated, how much per month/year do you spend? And how do you think about the results?

Well if you consider time as being money, then I would say 1000's of dollars, but out of pocket expenses...none.

The results being about 800 backlinks total, for both my sites, if not more.

You will kill your business even before you starts it if you go on paying for links coz back links wont come cheap if its there for sale.
Besides there's is no need to spend money on link building, since there are plenty of free sources out there.

I don't buy links (other than cheapie directory links like greenstalk.com).

I also, I should admit, ocassionally pay the $300 for a yahoo directory listing (never knowing whether it's worth it or not).

But I don't pay for other links. Article writing (sometimes for other author's sites), forum posts, and just general begging... those are my tactics.

I don't pay for basic back links, But I am willing to pay if I can get my business name on the home page of a good relevant website (for the traffic value alone, not for the backlink)

If you don't know how effective a listing is then link it to a different landing page. You can copy your index page and call it indexyahoo.html or something similar and then direct the Yahoo listing to that page. When you check your webpage statistics you will be able to tell whether Yahoo is generating trffic for you.

If you use Google Analytics then it pretty much does this for you as it tells you which are the top sites linking to your site and if Yahoo is one of those then it is worth paying the $300.

Default Responding to ideas2earn

I do use google analytics or (more commonly) web server statistics to track precisely where my traffic comes from. These statistics form the basis for my statement that Yahoo directory listing doesn't seem to give me much traffic.

Specifically, when I try Yahoo with a site that hasn't previously had a Yahoo directory listing, I see only the slightest bump in traffic from Yahoo. Therefore, my conclusion:

BTW, I'm not surprised that the Yahoo directory doesn't generate traffic... I am--and maybe this is naive--sort of surprised that a Yahoo directory listing doesn't indirectly improve rankings by Yahoo search engine. I remember people speculating years ago that a Yahoo directory listing might improve Google organic search results ranking.

BTW, sort of a related point, since it's Saturday night and Elton John said it's alright to (start) a fight. I have used Google conversion tracking to check how well Adwords convert. Because I sell a downloadable product and can place the conversion tracking script on the page that someone must get to to download the product, I really, really, really should know when an Adword converts. I have found that economics of Adwords often don't work for some products.

NOTE: I do think they work for other products I sell. E.g., for my CPA firm. And yes I know how to do PPC. (I had a friend and Google genius help set it up for me and have years and years of PPC experience at this point.)
