Default Trying to choose SEO firm - SEO.inc? iProspect?

Hi,
Columbia College is just getting into search engine marketing/optimization and we are currently trying to choose a SEO firm.

There is one called SEO.inc that we've looked into. Has anyone had any dealings with them? Have you used them? What do like about it? What don't you like? How is their support? etc.

What about iProspect?

Does anyone know of another we should look into?

I appreciate any comments. Thanks!

Hi Beth and welcome to the forum!

Both the companies you named are very well know and have, as far as I know, a good reputation in the search engine marketing industry. The one drawback of very large companies is they typically come with very large price tags as well.

A couple suggestions for you to also check out. First, I'll point out that some of our forum moderators provide these services and are excellent. You can spend time reading their posts and get a feel for their knowledge level and personality. Here is who to look for:

You won't go wrong with any of the above.

To further your research you can also check a couple of directories that list companies that provide these services:

http://www.seoconsultants.com/
http://www.seopros.org/

Finally, you can have a look at some of the advertisers at Search Engine Guide that provide these services in the resource directory:

Here are some articles about choosing an SEO/SEM that you'll likely find helpful:

To note, I've referred clients to many of the above mods several times and people have been quite happy with them.

If you are really set on a large company, you also might check out a company called The Karcher Group. http://www.thekarchergroup.com. I've also sent many referrals their way.

Default Jill Whalen?

It seems like Jill Whalen of http://www.highrankings.com should be included in your search.

I recently published an article, written for plastic surgeons and other medical professionals, that may still prove useful to you in your evaluation. If you have any interest, you can read, What You Don't Know About Search Engine Optimization Can Hurt You

One of the most important things in search engine marketing is being able to communicate comfortably with your SEO. All the decent ones can do a good job for you, although we all have our own little subtleties in operating methods. I would recommend you contact a few and enter into dialogue to decide who you feel best suits your way of working.

We offer the "Small Business Guide to Search Engine Marketing" which would be another helpful resource in educating yourself about search marketing. It always helps to have a basic understanding of search marketing before choosing an SEO.

I agree with OWG. Start talking to them and get some proposals. A good proposal and a few phone conversations will tell you a lot about the company.

Default DIY Solution

Would you guys say that SEO is a task that can be accomplished without the help of an outside contractor?

Yes. It will require an investment in time and it comes down to how much time you have.

If you are going to hire outside help you'll need to study SEO enough to know what your contractor is selling and will be doing for you.

If you are planning to do it yourself, then it will require much more research and a significant time investment.

Of course it can be done yourself, same as I could get the local butcher to answer my calls on caller divert <joke> It was just to get your attention.

Complete SEO/web marketing takes time. It takes MOUNTAINS of time to learn, and worse still, what you are learning might not be accurate or within the guidelines of the search engines.

If your not in a competitive industry, then do your keyword research properly (do not get this wrong or it is going to be a long hard leson you will learn). Then carry out the basics of page titles, content navigation links etc.

If you are in a competitive industry though I would advise not to attempt it yourself as it could take you literally years to se results. By all means carry out the basic web marketing stuff though like press releases, directory submissions, finding quality link partners etc.
