Probably not. Although's Google's ranking details are secret, it is known Wikipedia links are "no follow" which means they do not pass PageRank. This means Wikipedia links should not improve a ranking.

On the other hand, the purpose of a "link" is ultimately to get traffic and Wikipedia can be a good source for that. I wouldn't pass up such a link just because it does not improve a search ranking.

This question is tricky as well as simple to answer. I would like to share a Moz post written by Jason Lancaster - http://moz.com/ugc/the-nofollow-tag-...a-drunken-boss

In the above thread, I liked one of the comments which I believe you might be interested in.

"I think that nofollow is meant to say Google that webmaster is not ready to share his page's Page Rank with that particular linked page. But Google can give some value to the linked page without taking it from linking page.

I really believe that Wikipedia don't lose anything with nofollow links, but linked page is getting a lot from this nofollow link."

So did you get your answer?

I don't think back links from Wiki is really helpful. But it's not bad neither.
But if you use it all the time you will be probably punished by google.

You will not be punished for using a nofollow link. If anything, you could be punished for not using it for a paid link.
