Question Keeping A Good Ranking

I was wondering if someone could shed a light on how ranking actually works...
I have been working on my keywords and page descriptions for my website. For example, I gave a new description for a page. Then all day long (even after clearing my cache), I found my webpage on page 1 for the search "online dance classes". Then the next day, it disappeared, and went back to page 6 or so.

I have also released a few PRs and got reviewed by KillerStartups. So, the first couple of google search pages show links related to my website. Of course, these are going to go away with time, until the next PR or article...

So, my next logical question would be, how do I maintain a good ranking? Is it only due to traffic to the website?

thanks and have a good weekend.

If your site is new, you will likely see wild fluctuations in rankings to start. The best way to gain and keep solid rankings is to work on building inbound links to your site. Good content and page/website structure are also important, but links with good anchor text going to your site is the best way to start to build these rankings and keep them more in place.

Keep in mind even older, well established sites may see fluctuations in rankings. Most won't see a 50 position change, but I've definitely seen sites that bounce between a few positions quite frequently.
