Lightbulb Using the (~) Tilde to discover Alternative Keywords & LSI

Doing Searches using the TILDE can reveal alternative words or Phrases that could be helpful in further optimizing your Homepage - or - internal Pages of your website for less competative queries.

It also is a start in deciphering any current Latent Semantic Indexing and Concept Searching Capabilties of Google - possibly allowing for proactivity for what many SEOs predict as a new direction from Keyword Searching Emphasis.

The tilde (~) provides synonyms. While that's helpful, I'm not sure that it goes far enough.

I've been using Princeton's little tool for that for the last couple of years:

http://wordnet.princeton.edu/

It actually might yield you some more helpful results than what Google provides, or at least supplement it nicely. (Here's an interesting start on thinking about how tools like Wordnet can be used to organize information on the internet - The Organization of Internet Web Pages Using Wordnet and Self-Organizing Maps)

While there's some question as to whether or not the search engines are using Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), it makes a far richer website (semantically and economically) if you follow advice like what Dan Thies suggests in How To Prosper With The New Google, and you broaden your visitor's understanding by using words on your keyword-bearing pages that help explain the sense of the use of those words.

As ! ! states, the Google synonym search can help with that. So can wordnet, and a thesaurus.

Thus, using tools like wordnet, a thesaurus, or Google's similar search function can help you round out a site, and may improve your rankings in other ways, beyond some application of LSI (Don't step upon the tail)

It's good to be proactive. Where will Google go? Subject-Specific Popularity is one possibility.
