Lightbulb Bootstrap or hire Marketing Professional?

Okay smart folks, we have a predicament here.
How many of you create/design your own marketing materials (graphic designers exclude yourselves ?
Is it a good idea for us to save money by taking on the marketing efforts (i.e. creating our own flyers, brochures, business cards, rack cards, etc.), we are not graphic designer's by any measure, but feel like keeping that in house may be a good way to budget.

Does anyone have a software recommendation (something easier than adobe illustrator), or better a web-based marketing site?

All opinions/insights/thoughts welcome!
Thanks

I believe that small companies and start-ups can and must do a lot of their own marketing to conserve money. BUT... I also believe your material must make you look as established and professional as possible. You'll probably need a graphic designer to help you do that.

Some moneysaving ideas:

• Check local colleges for graphic design students nearing graduation. They will need a portfolio of samples when they hit the job market. You can often find one who will agree to help you for very little, sometimes just to have a real company's work in their "book."

• Try crowdsourcing. Groups like Crowdspring.com and 99 Design.com allow you too get speculative work from dozens of designers for a fraction of what a good local designer would charge. You only pay for the one design you choose best.

• Elance.com is another site where you can freelance graphic artists who will work for a reasonable fee.

Best of luck to you in your new venture!

It's going to depend entirely on your goals and your budget.

There is no one answer that can work for all situations.

Though I am a professional marketing consultant myself, I am still of the opinion that most people can create their own marketing materials competently. However, they have to be committed to put the time into learning in order to do so. Most business owners are too busy running their business to take the time necessary. There are so many different elements involved in putting together an effective marketing system that a lot could be missed opportunity-wise while developing that competence and the materials will seldom measure up to what could be done by a specialist.

What it boils down to is what is most important to your business both short term and long term. Utilizing a professional can speed up your rate of growth and bring you faster returns, but sometimes your budget can preclude finding someone of the quality you need. Good marketing is a combination of skill, research, testing and luck.

I do conceptualize my own and give it to graphic artist.

NEVER trust everything to web designers and graphic artist. They do things in "engineering" point of view.

Your marketing materials should be created or designed in a "marketing" point of view.

Thanks for the insights, are there online applications/programs that you have used to create the materials?

Yes, it's much advisable to do it yourself because it's not very hard to learn doing those materials. Learn it for yourself rather that hiring some labor force to do it for you. Corel draw and flash animation are the only softwares that are familiar to me. Those are must to know knowledge this days and are extremely needed by the market.
