Default Financial Nightmare

This is a pretty broad cry for help. My husband started his own contracting business and we have, quite honestly, done no accounting since it's inception 3 years ago. We are obviously in over our heads and i don't know who to turn to: accountant, bookkeeper, etc. I apologize for my ignorance and would appreciate and advice.

How have you been doing your taxes?? Start now. If you don't have an accountant, you should get one. To get organized you should look at having a bookkeeper to come in and help. Make sure you get a system in place so that once you are organized, updating and managing the books is easy and efficient.

Local accounting and bookkeeping services are cheaper than you think - call around and get some quotes. Or, find an independent bookkeeper who can catch you up. Do this with the idea of learning from them. Pay them for a year or two and in that time learn what they do - what forms they use etc. Learn and then take it over yourself.
Lastly, many free organizations like SBDC or SCORE offer classes on small business accounting - these are usually built around teaching the business owner to do their own accounting via Quick Books or similar programs. But, it might help you learn a bit and get back on track.
