Wow, $425 million in cash! The article mentioned that Rakuten plans other acquisitions. I wonder who will be next.

MarketingVOX is framing this acquisition as a challenge to Yahoo:

Japan Portal Buys LinkShare, Takes on Yahoo in U.S.

They make reference to an InternetRetailer.com article in which LinkShare chairman and CEO Steven Messer is quoted as saying:

"This is the first time we’ve heard about an Asian company coming to the U.S. to compete with Yahoo here."

The InternetRetailer.com article also states that Rakuten has a market cap of just under $10 billion, is regarded as the seventh largest Internet company in the world, and is in the portal business. Hmmm, the story gets more and more interesting.

Yeah, it looks like this could turn out to be a bit more than the proverbial acquisition news that some might think of it as. This company is the 10th largest on the net and looking to use linkshare as a starting point to increase their business in the US.

"The deal is expected to close in 4-6 weeks."

"to use LinkShare as a platform and a starting point to build a much bigger business in the U.S"

"LinkShare's performance-based marketing expertise across affiliate, search, and email capabilities provides Rakuten with an excellent first step to launch our U.S. operations and continue our international expansion," Hiroshi Mikitani, Rakuten's chairman and CEO"

So this is their first step launch into the US.

I am intrigued by the mention of search.
