For me, banner advertising is becoming more of an interruption from the perspective of customers.

Ask anyone who has just finished a copy of the Wall Street Journal on what are all the ads that they have seen in the journal. It is more likely that they will give you a blank look. People just don't focus much on banner ads as they used to.

Default Banners

Printed Banners will help pull people into your establishment if:
1) It can be seen and read at least 50ft from your establishment (use high contrasting colors and very few words)
2) Offer must be intriguing to a large target audience
3) Does not block any other signage or products inside or outside of the store

It may be good to have one sign for the business and a number of banners:

Unique Christmas Gifts
Don't Forget Valentines Day
Summer Vacation Supplies

I enjoy the fact that this post was started by someone who creates banners

But I'd agree that they can be useful.

Now-a-days web banners are being widely used for advertisement purpose. A web banner or banner ad is a form of advertising on the World Wide Web. This form of online advertising entails embedding an advertisement into a web page. It is intended to attract traffic to a website by linking to the website of the advertiser. The advertisement is constructed from an image (GIF, JPEG, PNG), JavaScript program or multimedia object employing technologies such as Silverlight, Java, Shockwave or Flash, often employing animation, sound, or video to maximize presence.

Web banners function the same way as traditional advertisements are intended to function: notifying consumers of the product or service and presenting reasons why the consumer should choose the product in question, although web banners differ in that the results for advertisement campaigns may be monitored real-time and may be targeted to the viewer's interests.

It's very important to now what's your target because having a banner is only third part of the strategy. You need money to find a good placement and as i said, to know your target.

I think it is also important where to position your banner so most of the people would notice it and won't be irritated like those which are too big and gets in the way of your browsing experience.
