For SEO to be successful, your target audience must consist of self-directed buyers. A self-directed buyer is someone who:
- Knows he has a particular need
- Can describe that need in terms of a solution
- Knows where to find someone who can solve it
- Is motivated to find someone
Unfortunately, in many industries, a disconnect occurs, where the decision-maker does not equate their problem to a particular solution. Mine is a prime example. Business owners typically don't walk into their shop and say to themselves, "Gee, business is down; I think I'll phone ABC Company and have them provide some advertising for me." In my experience, they usually fret and do nothing.
If your target market is characteristically not self-directed, then hunter prospecting methods like cold-canvassing and cold-calling may be your only recourse. If they're a mix of both, then try both types of marketing.
There's a very successful web agency in my town who recently posted a job opening for a sales person. One of the required qualities was that he or she be a "hunter-style business generator." Even SEO companies cannot rely entirely on backlinks and click-throughs to generate enough business.
