Carrie, do anything and everything you can to tie your website into Google's services. Get jacked into Analytics. This will make it easy for you to make yourself into a business page on Google+, which will help you in the ratings, provided that you maintain a good schedule of posting, interaction, and activity.
Google+ is a bit different from Facebook in that, where FB is about personal connections and sharing, G+ has a tendency to be more about technology, ideas, and sharing things like that.
A good idea is to single out the more popular thought-leaders in your industry on G+ and start interacting with them. Mind your frequency, as you don't want to come across the wrong way.
But if you've got your website jacked into Google Analytics and/or Google Webmaster Tools...and have also got it linked up to your Google+ account...all the interaction will do great things for you in the search results.
Even BETTER than a solid Google+ strategy is the practice of attaching a blog to your website and connecting your site to Google Authorship. This program was literally built to help give people that are creating good content an edge in the search results.
Hope this helps!
