Is it worth it submitting a site to DMOZ? I read somewhere that Google uses the DMOZ directory a the source for their directory and add a lot of weight to sites that are listed in DMOZ, any comments?

I'm not sure how much weight is given to the DMOZ directory any more, but Google does crawl it and they also source for their own directory. DMOZ has been pretty crappy for the past several years, but recently it seems that some of our submissions are actually getting accepted in a timely manner, so maybe they are getting their act together.

Any idea on how long it takes to get a site listed?

Anywhere between almost immediately and never.

Seriously, there is no standard. If the category editor is on top of things and your submission is on the up-and-up and there's not a huge queue and the moon and stars align in the right position, you can get in very quickly. If any of those things are not optimal, it can take longer. Sometimes a lot longer.

Best bet: submit and walk away. If you get in, that's great. If you don't, it's not worth losing sleep over.

BTW, you can still get to the Google Directory by typing in directory.google.com, but there's no link to it from the Google home page anymore. Not sure how long ago it's been since they refreshed from DMOZ.

We submitted several sites this year and have not had one of them accepted. I find DMOZ completely useless unless you happen to be fortunate enough to already be listed.

I agree with the uselessness of DMOZ... however for some odd reason three recently submitted sites have all been included. Go figure. We're not going back and resubmitting sites that have been ignored for a year or more. Can't hurt.

From what I've read here and on other forums is that the only sure fire way to get listed on DMOZ is to get appointed as an editor

And even that's no guarantee, because if your site is in competition with another editors, he or she will fight with you to keep your site from being listed ahead of theirs. What a joke!

According to g1 (who watches things closely) at wmw they just recently updated on 2007-08-18 which included edits completed by 2007-08-07.

The last time google updated their dmoz listings ... 2006-02-19
