I'm not looking for an argument, but I disagree. The algorithms (algo's) change all the time... but that is only the search engines trying to do their job (and stay ahead of the spammers).
I personally developed a website in 2004 that was optimized from the start; full of good content; articles; helpful information. Yes, it was a full bore store too... but the store side (for hard products) has been dropped. Now, it only sells information products and DVD's.
It continues to rank on the first page of Google in position 1-5 (depending on the actual search term) and gets well over 2,000 unique visitors a day. I have done NOTHING to the pages (over 300) since I set the site up.
SEO doesn't change. It's the same basics. Well, not really basics... but the same 10 things you need to do all the time, every time. I can say that I disagree from my own experience.
