Default New Google Layout

You have probably noticed the new layout Google has when you do a search. My question is, how is this going to effect our approach to seo? Why do you think Google has made this change? What does it mean for us?

Well when you do a search now most of the page is covered with Google Places and the map is on the right side instead of the top. This happen mostly if you search for specific town and service. In some cases there maybe only two or three organic listings other than Google places.

Today they also added related searches for brands/stores at the top pushing adwords and organic results even further.

I think they made the changes based on their testing, but it doesn't matter much as to why. It just is regardless of reasoning.

I think the impact is that google occupies more of the top of the fold real estate which is where the majority of the eyeballs are focused most of the time.

Pretty much every change impacts some by moving down and others by moving up. Here is a good lowdown on some of the impacts ....

When I worked with Google we signed a confidentiality agreement.

Boy I don't see how this could be good for anyone even Google, I can't see how trying to make Google places more exciting is going to be good, it's really not that exciting or more people would have used it.Why don't they make a special page for people that want to use Google places instead of forcing it on us.

Default Time will tell

Like a lot of things, only time will tell how the general public (non SEOs) receive these changes. I think google is making a lot of effort to combat "map spam" but a lot of listings have been juggled around, and we're even seeing some un-optimized listings taking top positions!
