Default Starting Up

Hi all.

I am setting up a online company based on a name ( which i cant say yet )

But my idea is based around kids t shirts. I am looking at an age range from 6 all the way to late teens really so more kids ( young adults then )

The t shirt will have a logo and a cartoon character on it ( the character i am designing as we speak )

This will be targeted up Kids up and down the country with the big picture thinking is every kid - young adult will want to be seen in this t shirt.

I work for a fashion company and have got some feedback already but just want to put it out there some more and see what people think.

The company will be an online company.

Cheers

usually I advise small-business owners to consider integrating a benefit into their company name, like "Nights and Day Emergency Plumbing". But in your case, a shirt is a shirt, the difference is the image it conveys and the lifestyle It suggests.

Are you targeting the kid's sense of wonderment and fantasy? Fantasyland Apparel, would be a fitting name. Are you looking for the goth look? Dark Rags, or some similar edgy sounding name... you get the idea.

Your business has a great potential in the market... In this kind of industry, one critical thing to consider is the quality of the shirt and the design... Since your market are the kids, then you have to make sure that your design is really attractive. I would suggest you uploading sample pics of your design and ask people in this forum (or other people) on how they think about your design..

Burrows,
First, good luck on your new business. I hope you will continue to post here on what works and what doesn't so we can learn from your experience.
I would just caution that starting an online business is tough. I hope you have a plan.
One suggestion, once you have your tshirts and have set up your website, you might send some free samples to mommy bloggers who have kids. If their kids like the shirts, they might write about it and give you some publicity.

Good luck with the business burrows!
Since it's gonna be an online business, I suggest you do some keyword research, and see how many times people search for terms like "kid's t shirts" or "t shirts for kids" etc. These results will give you an indicator of the kind of traffic you can expect.
Your designs have to appeal to kids. If you have kids of your own, ask them for their inputs.
Share more as you go along. Looking forward to it.

Thinking like an investor here - what's better about your shirts than the THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of shirts that already exist?

I mean, right now, anyone can go to target (b&m or online) and get a kids t-shirt with a logo and cartoon character... and it'll be a licensed cartoon character they already know! How are you going to compete with that? Kids like what they recognize.

One thing I've seen work is to go after local culture. Here in New Orleans a lot of t-shirt companies have been successful in the last decade by coming up with great t-shirt ideas that appeal strongly to the locals.
