I think first you decided what type of site you develop. Many types are there like business, real estate, online store, blog, photography and personal. So you can choose best CMS related your business.

Ex - If you create your online store then go for Shopify or Magento CMS.

I use PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, better known as PHP, is a highly popular, server-side scripting language that can be embedded directly into HTML coding.

PHP can do anything that CGI (Common Gateway Interface) can do, such as process form data and auto generate dynamic content. However, PHP can do much more. It can be used on all major operating systems and supports most web servers.

PHP's main focus is development for the web, so it has a quick development time and can solve scenarios much quicker than some of the other web design languages.

Just to make this sound like a broken record...

WordPress, WordPress, WordPress...

Like others have said- if you're asking this you're probably not well-versed in coding languages already.

That said, if you would like someplace to start then pick up a book (or start Googling) and start with html/css and work up to java, mysql, php, etc...

But if you're looking to start a business right now then WordPress is a good way to get a website up and running and you can always go from there.

That’s actually a fascinating question. So, in “normal” (that is, non-web programming) a great deal of software is written in just one programming language like C++ (an exception would be a piece of code written in C# and XAML, so in a case like that I suppose, that’s two, but usually the rule holds).

Not so with the web, you can have a web application that’s written in MANY languages. So, HTML and CSS are a must (it used to be just HTML back in my day) which provide the layout for your site, but for any “logic” at all you have to use Javascript or PHP or both, and you have to know the differences and decide which one is right to use (or if both are right to use).

You could go with a website editor, wordpress, or site like squarespace.com, but if you’re going to be doing a lot of programming for the web, the best way I think, crazy as it sounds, is to learn all the above web languages. You won’t regret it, but that’s if you have time, if you’re new to it you may just want to go with a quick solution like the above three (website editor, wordpress, or site like squarespace.com) to get something up and going to can live and work with quickly.

P.S. There’s also SQL which I decided not to mention above so as not to make things too complicated, but there’s always that one as well if you need it.

For beginners, or people with not as much experience? I would have to say HTML. There are a lot of HTML code generators online that can help you. And like myself, once you start using the same codes, you memorize them easily and get the hang of how the coding works.
