Default A Few Ideas But Looking For Advice And Input!

Hey guys

I am new to the forum so would just like to introduce myself, my names Tom and I am currently travelling through NZ and Aus with my partner, I am a a chef and have worked in various areas of the catering and hospitality industry, I prefer more relaxed environments and love working with people! I have a passion for baking, plants and growing mushrooms!

We have been looking into buisness ideas for the future in the hope of a challenge and becoming our own boss.

Anyway, idea number 1 I was thinking either a catering company specialising in corporate catering events starting with low numbers and cold pre-prepared home-made food in order to keep things simple consistent and manageable and building from there.
However after doing some market research almost every company out there provides services to corporate and private venues, extra services like hired equipment, staff etc and good food so it is feeling rather difficult to compete against these large companies.

Idea number 2, starting a company that specialises in providing barista style coffee service to catering companies that have already built a customer base, this would mean that it may add to the selling point of the company as it doesn't seem to be a service that they offer and would help me with getting more regular work (ideally), however downsides are that it may take many barista's and coffee machines to cope with large numbers of customers and may not be a as profitable.

Third idea is something i have a huge passion for and find it fascinating.
To start a gourmet mushroom growing buisness.
This would start small scale at home and hopefully grow and expand.
I think that it may be reasonably difficult to make a decent income within this industry unless working a vast-scale operation.

anyway this post im sure is too long already so i do apologise, but i am just hoping to get thoughts, other ideas, feedback or even just a friendly greeting, all is welcome and i look forward to hearing from you all!
all the best
Tom

also a few other ideas that i'll put out there;
providing pre-cooked frozen meal service to youth hostels and backpackers
or possibly similar service to elderly.....

anyway cheers
tom

I suggest you to collect some information from your competitors or who are in business are run franchise..Contact those people on LinkedIn and tell them that I am working on so and so project and need to submit this kind of information in college.

For any successful business, you have to research a lot about your competitors. You also need to collect some information regarding your target area and target people.

I seriously would give a headsup on the idea of providing frozen food to youth hostels. Seriously, even mine served something, which was not good and we almost had to eat out all the time or not eat at all, if we ran out of allowances (as outside food, where our hostel was located was quite expensive). If you can start a service providing cheap meal to youth hostel, it is bound to succeed. Am sure that you know this industry has a lot of money for you.

Default thanks for replies

hey guys
Thank you all for replying and taking the time to look at my post.
I will take into consideration the replies regarding market research and continue to research the industry.
The reply regarding the youth hostel frozen food idea, thank you for the input, I will also look into it further.
I think that the only way to ensure that it becomes lucrative is to cover a large area of hostels providing lots of food at low price or fewer orders of food at slightly higher price.
Any thoughts on that?
Anyway thank you for the taking the time and I look forward to hearing more ideas perhaps or input! cheers and kind regards
Tom
