I've submitted to many, but found that the niche directories that are more closely tailored to my industry are providing the most bang. Imagine that...

Over the last year, I've kept a close eye on my analytics and found that when I start getting some traffic from a particular directory, I look more closely at the ad/sponsorship opportunities that may be available for that site. If the traffic is enough to justify the cost, I go ahead and throw a little money at them to see what happens. For some sites, my sponsorship has paid for itself a few times over. For others, nothing.

This is all part of the game...Isn't if fun?

Fun - and smart on your part Brody!

Take it a step further... for the directories that did well, ask the owners if they'll rent their mailing list. If yes, offer an incentive to sites in complementary niches in return for a link.

The fact those sites are in the directory means their owners (may) know a little bit about marketing and may be receptive to the offer.

We are about 6 weeks out from lauching our website directory www.simplesearchonline.com it is somewhat along the same lines as yellow pages website. The difference with our website is that it doesn't cost businesses an arm and a leg and consumers can send messages to multiple businesses under the category they are looking for either locally, within a certain radius, or nationwide.

Google also considers link velocity supposedly so submitting to many at once isn't the best idea per some experts. It is generally considered that gaining links consistently over time is far more natural, whether this is true or not only big G knows.

I think the major problem with the "bad neighborhood" directories are if you provide the reciprocal link. I'd like to think so, anyways, because I've already submitted myself to a handful of directories.

directories are not bad at all, but I wouldn't spend lots of time on them. That would be a waste!
