My main concern is keeping it legal.I have my Federal Tax Id/EIN,I go friday to get my city AND county business liscense. Is there anything else I need to get before we open our doors? How do I know what to charge a sales tax on and how much?I am in Lawrenceburg,Tennessee and even the city/county officials I have spoke with seem to know nothing and THAT scares me,LOL.I went to our Chamber of Commerce yesterday and they knew nothing either.I just do not want to get six months or a year down the road and find our I was suppose to do something different. One place told me on fresh cut flowers I didnt collect tax but on silks I do??I am getting worried about all of this now.Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

I think you are on your way since you have checked with the city and county, plus setup your EIN. I would also check with the state. Those are the levels of government typically you want to make sure you are complying with - city, county, state, federal.

Regarding the sales tax, I would figure out which state agency/department handles tax collection and then contact them. They should be able to provide you the exact answers needed regarding collecting taxes and making payment. Regarding the fresh vs silk ... that likely could be the case - again I would check with the department with the tenn state government that collects sales tax to confirm what is required.

Personally, I would hire an accountant and pay him an hour to sit down and make sure everything is really set before getting too far ahead of yourself. Since that is their expertise and what they help with daily, the advice can often even pay for itself. Plus if/when things do go wrong you have a relationship with an accountant to assist you. Hope that helps, and best of luck...

I am in East Tennessee, Oneida area. The state sales tax is 6% for food, all other is 7%. Lawrence County sales tax, effective 9/1/07, is 2.75%. You can find almost any business information you need on the State of Tn. website.

Hope this helps.
