Default Apple Drops IPhone Price From $599 To $399

I was surprised to see Apple dropped the price about $200 after just debuting the product a couple months ago/june. That is a large price drop so soon after introducing a product. I'm not sure I understand why, but curious if any have theories why they might have done this.

The biggest issue to me is that early adopters who did buy at the higher price are probably going to have some resistance with future Apple product debuts.

I'm willing to bet they have lowered the price to sell as many as they can before they release a new ipod for Christmas.

No new ipod has been scheduled just yet, but if you read between the lines you can see something new is coming.

As an early adapter I will never buy an Apple product on release and from what I've heard on forums either will a lot of people. Apple is desperate, they didn't sell as many as they thought so they are doing this to boost sales and make their 1 million mark by years end(probably a board decision) but at what cost? I think this will come back to bite them in the butt later.

On that note I'm still very happy with the phone but I'm upset that I can even sell it for half of what I paid just two months ago.

Looks like the impact is already being felt. Here is a letter posted by Steve Jobs stating that they are providing $100 store credit to those who did buy at the previous price. Also those who bought within 14days can get a refund as apple has a policy regarding price changes

Quote:
we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

So perhaps you save 200 dollars on the hardware, but isn't the phone/internet service silly expensive and requiring a contract?

In my opinion, apple was trying to make money on people who wanted the latest and the greatest, knowing full well that they would soon drop the price.

My 3 cents (sorry Torka!),
Evan

Whoa! Which may mean, save dollars...and you can afford to buy the 'soon to be released' Ipod.

THe iPhone service is the same price as any other cell phone service if not cheaper. They all also require a contract, this is not something new with the iPhone.

Apple thought more people would pay that price but when they didn't they realized they couldn't charge that much so that had to lower the price quickly. I really doubt this was part of their plan because it never has been before. It's a smart move to give credit because they know it will make people fell better and they will just get the money back when they use that credit to buy Apple products.

I'm surprised that you see what they've accomplished in this market as a failure. The iphone has only been out a couple of months.

Other than setting themselves up for a Christmas release of a new ipod I think you'll find that Apple is simply finding their position in the market. The end of 2 months into the market seems like a great time to revisit issues such as price, software additions and marketing.

Apple is was only projecting a 1% market share within 1 year. Which equals out to approx 1 million phones.

They are more than on their way to achieving this target. So I don't understand why people seem to be second guessing their marketing strategy.
