There are certainly things you can do to protect your website from being hacked, if that's what you're asking.

Protecting your web server against a virus (such as PC antivirus protection) is the job of your hosting company. If your company isn't able or willing to keep their servers safe and secure, you need a different hosting company. In general, you want a company that keeps up to date with the latest releases of operating system and web server software and that applies security patches in a timely manner.

It's also helpful if they have a strong tech support group that can help you out in the event something goes wrong.

When it comes to your website, what you need to do depends on the platform you're using to run the site. For instance, there are security plugins you can use for Wordpress that will make it much harder for hackers to break in to the administrative login. Some of these will also periodically scan the Wordpress core files to see if any of the files have changed (which might simply be a software upgrade, but might also be signs of a hacker at work).

There are also external services available for a fee that will monitor and help secure your website.

In general, you want to select passwords for any FTP, database or content management system software access that contain a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. You don't want to use any words that are in the dictionary or word/number combinations that might be easy for someone to guess. The longer the better.

While it's impossible to 100% PREVENT all problems, with a little forethought and vigilance, you can minimize the chances of getting hacked.

You can use Nofollow attribute to protect your website from getting spammed. Google will consider the links if your give Nofollow tag to links linking to your site.

I'm sorry Melissa, but your answer is confusing and wrong.

You cannot apply a nofollow attribute to links that point to you. That can only be done by the webmaster of the site where the link appears. You can ask for them to make a link nofollow, but they are not obligated to comply.

Second, coding links as "nofollow" has nothing to do with protecting from spam. It is only intended to alert the search engines that the link in question is either paid advertising or that the webmaster of that site for some reason doesn't vouch for the quality of your site and doesn't want to pass any link value through to you.

What this means: if somehow you do manage to get all those other webmasters to designate the links pointing to your pages as "nofollow", then Google will in essence see that there are no reputable links pointing to you. This is a recipe for SEO disaster. Your site has absolutely NO CHANCE of ranking well in Google if all the links pointing to it are nofollow.

What type of website do you own? For instance, if you own an online shopping website, then you can safeguard your website data and customer information by installing an SSL certificate on the website. Similarly, there are many other website protection measures that you can adopt.
