I've used Funnel Web Analyzer and it is is a good free tool. Another good freebie is WebLog Expert Lite.

There are plenty of good $9.95 per month hosting companies who offer online log file analyzers, such as Webalizer or Urchin. Both of these work well and are automated, so you do not have to download files.

Thanks a million Barry. Delving into website stats is on my job list for this week and I now have a lovely lot of info to help me get started. Brilliant.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the freebie tracking info... however, I am a bit paranoid about the freebies... perhaps, because I had this weird thing happen on my site.

For this particular freebie tracker that I found, I put in the "invisible" html on my home page when I initially set it up and over time, it somehow multiplied on itself - so big that it slowed the loading of my page down to the point of ridiculous (worse than if I had a dial-up). I, of couse, didn't realize what was happening until I started making some updates to my site and it was OBVIOUS something was terribly wrong.

I quickly determined what had happened and deleted ALL the cancerous html "growth" from my site and viola! All is well... but I have no tracking that is as specific as I had w/the freebie.

Has anything like this happened to you? Or w/any of the freebies you mentioned?

Thanks for your help!
Valerie

Hi Valerie

I completely agree that you should have a healthy degree of paranoia regarding free programs. But there are a lot of legitimate freebies that don't contain spyware or cancerous growth hormones.

Both Funnel Web and WebLog Expert Lite work offline on downloaded files. I run Norton AntiVirus, AdAware, SpyBot and WebRoot Spy Sweeper on each PC that's exposed to the Internet. I have not detected any problems with these programs. If anyone else has, please add your two cents.

In my opinion, they appear to be safe.

My friend has been using webalizer for years. Its free and provides decent info. Anyone of the programs mentioned here should do the trick for you. Its as important to know where your visitors are coming from as it is to know how many.

AWstats is the one for me. Its free, far prettier than webalizer and if i remember correctly gives more information. If you extremely serious about it for a large company then you should look into webtrends which will tell you just about everything about your visitor except maybe their shoe size
