Craigs list advertisements do work. First of all you can get free do follow backlinks, secondly sometimes google brings craigs list ads in it's search results (for not very competitive keywords).

I agree... the whole point of Craigslist is for advertising products or services in a certain place for a certain amount of time. Anything else, and you're just manipulating the purpose of the site.

I've tried tried Craigslist and had very little success with it. Kijiji.com worked much better for me, and it has a more professional feel to it which may help people who have a problem with the "sleazy" factor of Craigslist.

Yes, craigslist can be very effective IF you do a little pre-work.

1. Think of it as a testing platform as well as an advertising medium.
2. Make sure you can track views of your ad. There are some fairly simple ways to get basic stats of how many times your ad is viewed.
3. Track how effective you are in converting those view to actionable clients. The most basic version of this might be in linking to your site using bit.ly--they provide free link stats.
4. Modify/Compare your ads to find the most successful one. And remember that sometimes what you think is less successful may pull very well.

Caveat- some categories in some cities are just too full for you to effectively cut through the noise, but until you test you could be missing out on some good lead generation.

This can work for some especially if you are providing a "deal". Most people go to craigslist when looking for "deals" or looking to go the cheap route. At the very least, you're get some exposure and some traffic to your website. It may not be quality traffic, but it is some traffic.

If it's not quality traffic, it's not going to convert. So what's the point?

Default Yes, Craigslist works!

Craigslist works for those whose prospects frequent Craigslist.

Pure and Simple.

If you have the right message at the right time for the people in Craigslist, Craigslist works for you !
