Default .mobi ?????

Hi,

I was hoping someone could shed some light on .mobi and if you think this format will take off. I would assume that major e-commerce will want to jump on board w/ compliance. Here is a link to some info on it. .mobi

I purchased one for my domain but also saw many big competitors were available. Is this a waste of money?

The key differentiator for the .mobi domain is the mobile user experience. This is driven by dotMobi Switch On! Guides. The guides contain a mixture of mandatory and recommended best practices for developing mobile content and services.

The Web Developers Guide is the first in the series of Switch On! Guides to be published by dotMobi. It is based on the work of leading mobile companies as well as participation in the W3C Mobile Web Initiative. dotMobi is committed to developing Switch On! Guides based on open standards with a focus on predictable user experience and interoperability.

The Switch On! Email Guide is designed to help implement email systems for the dotMobi domain. This document is still in draft status and, as such, its provisions are not yet in force for email services running in the dotMobi domain. It is provided here for information and guidance purposes.

The Guides cover a variety of Internet and domain-related issues and will be published on our web site as they become available.

Thanks,
Tom

The .MOBI gTLD (Generic Top Level Domain) is a bit of a marketing ploy. The idea behind it is similar to other suggested gTLDs, like .kids or .xxx, whereby visitors who go to sites with those suffixes can expect certain things. In the case of .kids, they might expect content that was safe for children, and in the case of .xxx ... well ... something a little different.

In the case of .MOBI, visitors should be able to expect to access sites that are coded according to the developing 'standards' for mobile device access as defined by dotMobi (the 'registrar' for that gTLD). In other words, when you go to a site in the .MOBI TLD you can expect it to work with your cellphone. Same with mail servers under the .MOBI domain, according to their documentation.

The same trademark policies are in effect for this gTLD, i.e. you won't be allowed to purchase ibm.mobi unless you're actually IBM.

Personally, I find it a bit amusing that the domain for mobile devices adds a character to the length of the nomenclature. It's already a pain to type anything into a mobile device, and this adds one more stab at the keyboard.

Hope that helps!

I think .MOBI has potential.

A) Mobile phones are the future. Once we have an evolved phone browser in place, .MOBI could become mainstream.

B) A decent domain name is difficult to find these days. .MOBI opens up a whole new space.

I signed up for 70 .MOBI domain names during their initial offering and only 7 were sucessfully registered. Luckily I got rsvp.mobi

my two cents ... is that while we often hear 'could become mainstream' with new domains, can anyone name one that actually has become mainstream?

Logan, I have a feeling it may be a matter of time. It's very difficult to get a decent .com domain these days, unless you're willing to shell out at least $500 to a squatter. .biz and .us are fairly sucessful. And I think out of all of them, .MOBI makes sense because the mobile phone experience is unique, and requires it's own approach in terms of format and design.

My bet is .com, .net and .org won't be able to satisfy everyone as more people get online in the comming years, and these younger top-level domains will become more useful as a result.
