Pick a site that you like and see how it is structured. Take a peak at the source code by clicking CTRL-U (using Firefox not sure what it is in IE) and understand how the code is affecting how the page looks.

Set up a test site on your computer or create a test site on your hosted domain. Play around with various sections and see the impact of your changes.

Firefox has a pretty cool tool called Web Developer - it allows you to view the source code, CSS, forms, images etc. All sorts of things to get you in trouble

Angie,
I think your site can be reproduced with wordpress and joomla. Both have a lot of templates out there and coding is basically minimum. Both are free.
