We've had good experiences using Microsoft Security Essentials, especially when used in conjunction with the fairly robust firewall in Windows 7. Be careful of relying on free A/V software when it comes to critical business use, however. One major reason is that there is very little in the way of tech support for free software, and that could be a huge problem for your business if you run into trouble.

I have tried Avira anti virus free personal edition, was very impressed with it.It has an easy to understand log which records all scans done, virus, worms and trojans detected and fixed. It can be set for auto updates to be downloaded while we browse the internet, gives you live protection.Their website also provides an extensive list of virus,so if you have found something previously you can check it out and seek advice.

I would definetly have to say AVG too, for a free one it is certainly the best one around

Anti-virus software might be useful, but I find that they tend to slow down the computer a lot. So I don't use anti-virus software, instead, I do these things to make sure that I can get back on track soon after my computer got malware.

1. Make sure you have recovery disk so you could do reset to factory default in case of virus.

2. Use windows system restore to restore the computer to a previous sane state.

3. I use AxCrypt to password protect my text file, even if the virus could transmit any file over the Internet connection, my critical personal info won't be hacked as it is password protected.

Currently I am using AVG Internet security 9.0 and have no problem with and I am totally satisfied that's why I also recommend AVG.

Microsoft Security Essentials has worked pretty well for us. Its free, seems to be highly rated by the tech community, and they've helped me via phone support at no charge.

Based on some recent reviews 12/2010, Avast had better detection rates than AVG and is better with memory usage as well. Cnet and PC World had some comparisons as well but they were older reviews. Security software plays leap frog with each other, so I'm always looking a new reviews.

Somebody posted here regarding Kaspersky, the program is very solid and I would second that but... its only a 30 day free trial so its not completely free. I'm sure one could work around that but it wouldn't be ethical/ As far as completely free I'd go with AVG. Although I think Kaspersky is on a completely different level than AVG or any other antivirus.

I do not use antivirus at all, because there is no perfect one in nature. One of them see that can't see another and vice versa. So I decided not to use it at all. May be I'm lucky, but my laptop works wonderfully and I have no problems with any viruses.
