Default 3 Easy Methods For Building An Email List

One of the simplest, least expensive and effective forms of marketing is email marketing. Weve all heard of it and may have even received a few emails from other companies before but how do you get emails?

First Id like to explain how NOT to build an email list.
Stay away from buying an email list; it is never a good idea to buy one. The people who are in that email list did not opt into receiving emails directly from your business. Companies and people who sell aggregated email lists frequently use deceptive methods to gather emails. This would give you a huge list of people who have little to no interest in your product or services.
Also, steer clear of data-mining. Data-mining is just a fancy way of saying going to other websites or directories to take information from them. This takes a lot of time and the leads are of very low quality, so there wont be much benefit.

Now, here are a few easy ways to build your email list organically!

1) Start a newsletter!

A newsletter allows you to keep your clients up to date with the latest updates, events, promotions and sales! This way you know for sure clients are:
A) Interested in your products and services
B) Are willing to be contacted by you
C) Have a valid email address

2) Use QR Codes

QR Codes are a highly underused tool that business owners can use. Best part is you can generate as many as you want for FREE! These QR codes can be scanned by smart phones, like iPhones and Android devices. Once you generate one, it is up to you where to put them! Some suggestions are:
A) Business cards and Flyers
B) Menus and Table Tents
C) Car wraps
D) In retail locations
E) Receipts
F) Tee shirts
G) Cups, Pins, Mouse pads & other marketing materials
3) Clipboard & Paper
The least technologically involved way to build an email list is by simply asking your clients to leave their email address on a paper form. You dont necessarily need a clipboard; but you can put a stack of forms on tables, in front of the register, and if you go to trade shows, you can get a lot there!

These are 3 excellent tips, but I would like to add that if you have time, data mining in online directories is not such a bad thing.
I have done it in the past and have seen great results from it. If you have time and know how to look you will create a good targeted list from online directories.

You are right!

For B2B sales data mining can be useful. Unfortunately, most directories don't allow you to directly access the emails of the businesses. Also, most of the time the email that is listed is the generic "[email protected]".

Tools like Kimono help scrape data in bulk, so it takes out the hard work of copy and pasting, and just allows to collect as many as possible.

The techniques I originally posted were meant more for mom n pop shops, or small brick n mortars. I agree the mining technique works, but there are no "people directories" for mom n pop shops to mine!

You are right, we had to go to each website individually and take the contact info from there. A slow process, but we now have a database of 10.000 emails.

Also, the methods you presented are great, I just added that there is one more if you have time and nerves

Blogging is another fantastic way to get leads for any business. In fact, many websites have taken up this approach to incease brand awareness and sales. Blogging is fantastic because it allows you to write about a topic related to your niche. An article that can organically rank for your target keywords in google and bring in traffic for years on end. If done correctly, you also have the ability to connect with people in a unique way. Many websites have fantastic blog posts with a CTA at the bottom, (offering a free video training series, for example) and gain leads via an opt-in form at the bottom of the page.

When it comes to lead generation, the possibilities are endless!

Creating an e-book and offering to trade the e-book for an e-mail address is also a good way to prove credibility and increase your list of contacts.
