In addition, Bob Bly's classic, Copywriter's Handbook, is excellent.

you can by practice, but remember that sloppy practice is just that.

it helps to stay abreast of the lattest materials outthere, I like to read small advertising clips on a weekly basis and Identify the parts (lure, risk-reversals, and wording)

FYI

It's great that you already have a background as a writer. The next step would be to expand your knowledge of copywriting and learning the skills, the strategy, and the marketing behind it. Some excellent resources that I've learned much from include:

The Copywriter's Handbook, Third Edition: A Step-By-Step Guide To Writing Copy That Sells by Robert W. Bly

Start & Run a Copywriting Business by Steve Slaunwhite

Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This: A Guide to Creating Great Advertising (Adweek Series) by Luke Sullivan (Paperback - Feb 8, 2008)

Michel Fortin also has an excellent blog for anyone who wants to know more about copywriting and marketing: http://www.michelfortin.com/3-tips-f...ywriting-work/

Once you gain an understanding of the basics of copywriting, you next should try to get as much writing practice in as possible. Clickbank.com is one way to practice your persuasive writing skills. You create your own affiliate advertisements, and see how well your copywriting performs in the real-world. You can offer to work for free or at a low price when you start out to build up your experience and portfolio.

Good luck!

Read and practice. Then create a strong portfolio of your work (both published and unpublished). The portfolio will make you much more desirable.

As a trained journalist I understand how you feel about making the transition to online copywriting. Fortunately there is a lot of quality information around on the internet. Do your research and read some qualified opinions on the subject you are trying to learn more about and you will be fine.

Cheers

I don't consider myself a professional copy writer because I don't take on work, but I have written a ton of web pages.

I started by watching what the real pros do. I read evey ad I could get my hands on. From that, I developed my own style working hard on headlines that attract, and then content that holds interest.

Good luck! Hope this helps!
