What does it do when it visits a site and goes through the pages?

What is it looking at etc etc

It 'fetches' a page and saves it (cache) along with values that will determine rankings based upon the search engine's algorithm. Additionally, a search engine robot (basically a computer program) includes other functions - such as taking the links from the page and storing those for future/further urls to crawl.

One of the common misconceptions though is that it actually follows links on your site. Technically it doesn't. It caches the page, then asks for a url to go to.
