Why do perfectly rational people make irrational decisions? - Perfect tag line I should say.

Because the don't have all the facts and are a little to self reserved to invest the time to avoid making bad decisions.

They are lazy.

You should probably read another really good book then:

Check out "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" by Dr. Robert Ciadini. It's a very good read. It talks about the most the six fundamental "Weapons of Influence" that salespeople use in everyday situations.

People are definitely irrational But sometimes for good reason.

A few years ago I had a marketing class that was primarily group discussions and case studies.
One case dealt with perceived value.
A company carried a brand of womens shoe priced at$30.
They didn't sell any of them so they dropped the price five or ten buck, still no luck.
So the manager decided to raise the price to $60 and they sold most or all of that particular shoe.
So customers got $30 quality for $60. At least if there is a correlation between actual quality and price.

bzElam, you make a good point here and it's one that I've seen in action myself.

Take eBay for example. Run an auction beginning at $4.99 for an item - and receive no bids at all for the entire week. The item doesn't sell. Run it again at $9.99 and the bidding will begin and you will sell it for over $20.

It never ceases to amaze me. They could've purchased it for $4.99 the week previous. . . but the bidding frenzy turned them on and they paid over $20 for it instead.

Go figure . . .
