It depends on what specific task you are trying to accomplish.

I own a whole bunch of tools, scripts and software. One of the tools that I constantly find myself using is the free and public Google Keyword research tool. I find it much faster to do a quick general analysis of a keyword than I do by using one of my expensive keyword tools. I don't want to waste fifteen minutes trying to figure out approximately how many searches there are for a specific phrase. I just want the answer as fast as possible.

I think Google Analytics is the best tool for SEO work as it offers too many different functions for work.

Setup Google Analytics on your website, and as others have said, use the Google Keyword search tool. It gives you a good idea of A) what the hot search items are for your site and B) solid keywords that may not be as competitive on PPC pricing.

One strategy I've been pursuing is passing on the most searched keywords in my PPC campaign, but focusing on smaller market keywords where the cost per customer acquisition is miniscule. This works especially well with location based services (I explicitly specify cities where my services are offered). Not only is this cheaper on a CPC basis, but it also is a much higher quality lead than someone doing a general search.

I agree with Dowson, I adore Google Analytics because I need to check statistics almost every day and Analytics helps me a lot.

Google Analytics is amazing. It lets you track visitors to your site, and exactly where they are coming from (other sites, PPC, organic search, etc). The level detail is ridiculous. I also use the Google Webmaster Tools to track how many searches my site shows up on and also how high up in those searches (first page or not is crucial information)
