Default How To Best Find A Good Accountant?

Hello!

I am starting my own business soon and have been made aware by various independent sources that finding a good accountant is very important.

If I were to do it right now, I'd speak to friends and get recommendations, I'd do a bit of web research, and before selecting one finally I'd interview/sit down and talk with the top 3 that interest me.

How does that sound? What kind of questions should I ask? What criteria should I be looking for?

Any other advice?

Thanks for your help

Try angies list as well

Ask how many small businesses your accountant works with
What are the different types of businesses they work with
What are their turnaround times for the different work you would give them
See if they are responsive
Talk to their clients
and you should be good

Might be a little late to throw this in here but hope it be of benefit to somebody.
A few key issues to consider when selecting the right accountant would be their reputation, their area of specialisation,of course qualifications must be there, your needs(is it an audit, review, tax compliance etc you are looking for?) and their demeanour should also factor in.
The kind of questions to ask:This should dive very deep down to gauge the knowledge in the matter since accounting is one of the most sensitive aspects of business, you don't want to gamble here. You can seek professional help when interviewing the prospective candidates since looking up questions on the web yet you're not well-versed on the subject matter yourself won't be of much help.

I'm not sure which country you are based in by most have a recognised accountancy institute for example in the UK ICAEW is the most well respected.

Their website lists members and I would start with that, look up the ones in your local area and make some calls, you'll pretty quickly find someone with a reasonable price and a helpful friendly approach.

I say put your feelers out in your local community - let them know that you are shopping for a CPA - then let them pitch to you. Listen to their presentation and that will spur the questiosn you need to ask.
