Lightbulb Do-It-Yourself Search Engine Optimization

Hey All,

During a web design and internet marketing workshop that I delivered last month in Las Vegas, I realized that I had been taking something for granted. As I delved into the search engine optimization (SEO) portion of my presentation, it occurred to me that my audience, communications staff from hospitals across the U.S., probably wouldn’t have the technical ability to effectively optimize their hospitals’ web sites for better search engine rankings. Come to think of it, I doubt that even many corporate marketers could dive into their site’s code and make the necessary page-level adjustments and database optimizations required for good SEO.

About a week after the workshop, I received my speaker evaluations. My realization was confirmed. Several attendees commented, “that SEO stuff seems pretty technical…I wish we could do more ourselves to help our rankings.”

I bring good news. There are actually a lot of powerful search engine optimization techniques that can be executed with no technical expertise...

Great article but when you say SEO it still needs some on-page optimization I know that link building does not require technical expertise and it is more on marketing your website. Thanks for sharing.

Good article on building back-links. I was interested in hearing what you had to say about on-page optimization, whether you had some minimally technical thoughts on optimization through things like number of meta keywords, number of pages that interlink on a site, etc. That's actually where I thought the article was going, based on the initial text, though you did summarize the basics of link building nicely.
Thanks,
Junior

Thanks for your comment Junior.

The real key here is that mostly all on-page optimization techniques (except for keyword integration within content, fed through CMS) will require that a site owner dive into their site's code, and therefore requires some level of web/technical expertise. Most marketers don't have that expertise, hence the DIY title.

I'll save the minimally technical on-page techniques for another article...
